Previously I had been in Rome in the spring or summer, and never in November. Besides, I was always living at the bottom, in the “pot” remaining between the hills, and from where the perception of the city as a whole was at first difficult. Then, in November 2001, we were able to stay in Villa Lante, located on a slope of Gianicolo, #Janus-hill#; it blessed us daily with an almost unimaginably widespread view. This 1500’s villa is built in a Tuscan way in the uphill of the hill, which in ancient times rose to the highest of the hills surrounding Rome in that point—until during the construction of the Giuseppe Garibaldi monument in 1886–95 the top of the hill next to it was increased. Still the view of Villa Lante’s terrace opens to the city like a 1500-century topographical landscape.
